Most toddlers are shy. They can be a little clingy with their parents and don’t like interacting with other adults, especially children of their own age. But your little one doesn’t have to feel awkward at social events. Here are some tips, to help your toddler overcome their shyness and build their confidence.

Why it occurs?
Toddler shyness is quite natural. Most tots have immature social skills, due to their limited experience in group situations. But once your child gets more experience in these social situations, they will eventually come out of their own shell. Toddlers usually overcome their shyness when they attend preschool, while others compensate for their shyness in other ways.

Set a good example
Don’t think your toddler isn’t paying attention to how you act in public, because they are and will always follow your lead. If you show yourself to be comfortable in certain social situations, they will start to do the same.

No pressure
Do not pressure your child into social situations. Shy children are more anxious and will not respond well, to being pushed into activities. Take small steps with your toddlers and understand their limits, when it comes to their social interactions.

Avoid labels
If you constantly call your toddler shy to others, especially in front of him/her, they will see this as an easy way out of social interactions. While you shouldn’t pressure your child into overcoming their shyness. You shouldn’t let them avoid social situations either, as it will only make things more problematic in the long term.

Preparation
Before a social event start preparing your child about who will be there and what will be going on. This will help lower your child’s anxiety, but also help build your toddler’s confidence.

Help break the ice
You may not want to interfere too much in your toddler’s social interactions. But they still may need a little help, especially if your little one wants to play with another child. There is nothing wrong, in helping your toddler start a social interaction with another child. Soon as they seem comfortable, you can make your exit.
