What healthy breakfast options can I offer my child?

It doesn’t matter what your age or life stage, eating a healthy breakfast gives your body the best start to the day. It is never too late for you to begin. If you have children, it's never too soon to get them into this habit too.  A child may suggest they are not hungry in the morning but it's important to break the overnight fast by eating something, no matter how small.  Mornings in any family are typically rushed. If you’re finding it hard to make sure that your child gets a healthy breakfast, then there are a few ways you can make things a little easier on everyone.

On the run ideas:
If you really have no time to spend making breakfast, then a cereal bar, some fruit, a healthy muffin or even a readymade whole-wheat bagel with peanut butter are all great options that take no time at all to prepare and can be eaten on the run.

Five minute options:
For days when you have a little time, breakfast cereal is a really quick and healthy choice. Serve it with low fat milk or yogurt. You could also add fruit for added flavour and extra nutrients.

Ten minute brekkies:
When you have a more time, a smoothie, made with a soft fruit, some yogurt and a little juice is a great idea. Alternatively, you could try pancakes and fruit with yogurt, or a portion of readymade fruit salad. Eggs or baked beans can be offered as an alternative. There is no excuse for skipping breakfast and don't let your kids think that it is an option or get into the habit.  You'll be teaching them something for life.

Did you know?
When you start the day with a nutritious and balanced breakfast, you’re refuelling your body and brain, kick-starting your metabolism and getting the energy you need to embrace the morning. By skipping breakfast, children miss out on vitamins and minerals that are important for a well-balanced diet; important nutrients that children, and even adults may not make up for later in the day.
