Most toddlers will, at some point, attempt to assert themselves by refusing to buckle up in their car seat. While you could try waiting it out, and calling their bluff, this rarely works. In fact, you may find yourself sitting, or standing in the driveway for quite some time while your child continues to refuse to be strapped in.
A better idea is to explain to your child that you won’t go anywhere unless he is safely buckled into his car seat. Since most toddlers love to travel to exciting places (even if it’s visiting his grandparents) he should soon realise that if he wants to go anywhere, he has to be in his seat.

Keep child friendly CD’s and toys in the car, to make the trip more enjoyable for your child, and make sure that he’s not hungry or over tired when you try to put him in the car.
