Many children learn one or two words before they even turn one, and they’ll probably pick up a few more along the way, but it isn’t until your child turns two that she’ll really start talking properly.
In fact, between the ages of two and three years old, your toddlers’ vocabulary will jump from a few words to around 300, and she’ll be able to understand about 900.
During this time, she’ll also learn a bit about volume, tone and pitch – so expect some screaming, and some whispering. Another thing your child will start doing is building simple sentences, and even questions, and she’s probably realising a lot more about pronouns like I, me, you and us than you know.
In the early stages, your toddler probably won’t grasp the finer points of tenses, but you may notice that she adds an ‘ed’ to verbs, to indicate that they occurred in the past. Those kinds of advances in language are an important sign that your child is on her way to becoming a great conversationalist, and by the time she’s reached three; you should be able to carry on a full conversation with her.
