You asked

How do I raise my child to be bilingual?

Being fluent in a language other than their home language, can only help your child later on in life as far as job opportunities grow. Also, if you and your spouse are from different language backgrounds, it is a good idea for your child to learn both languages as well. All that is needed is plenty of patience and determination on your part.

Expose your child to the extra language from as early as possible. The best way to do this is for you to speak to your child in one language only, and your spouse in another. These languages should be spoken to your child every day, as much as possible.

When your child is old enough to read and write, then give him the opportunity to read books in the second language, and to keep a journal in that language as well. As they grow older, teach them about the cultural background of the second language – this will give them a sense of pride in where they come from.

To really raise your child's awareness about his second language, and if you can afford to, take a trip to that country, and let him see firsthand what the language and the people are all about.
