A child who loves to read will love to learn, so it’s important to make reading fun. Here are several ways to get your preschooler into the reading scene and have fun while doing so:

  • Story time - Many bookstores and libraries offer storytelling for children. Some story tellers get the children involved in the story by acting as the characters in the books. Children learn that books are fun and imaginative.
  • Create an alphabet poster – Search through old magazines for letters of the alphabet with your preschooler. Cut them out and glue them on a poster board. Your child will enjoy this creative activity and will have a great poster for their room.
  • Build a reading tent – Use blankets and sheets to create a tent called the ‘reading tent’. Then let your child choose a book and grab a flashlight. Although he may be too young to read with you, he will love holding the flashlight and looking at the pictures as you read his story to him in the ‘reading tent.
  • Put on a play – Use one of your child’s books to put on a play. Have your child select the character that he would like to be and dress-up like the characters. This is an activity that you can get several children involved in.
  • Make finger puppets – Cut the fingers from some old gloves and decorate them to resemble characters from one of your child’s favorite books. Then, when you are reading the book together, your child can act out the story with the finger puppets.
