Thomas the Tank Engine has been a kids' favourite since 1984, but now he's set to get a revamp - and some multicultural new friends!

Some fourteen new engines being introduced to the show in an effort to make it a bit more modern.

The new characters will come from all corners of the earth, including India, Mexico and Brazil, and will be introduced to fans in a film called The Great Race, according to the New York Times.

Four of Thomas's new companions will also be female, including the "fearless" Ashima from India.

This is great news, as the more powerful female characters on kids' TV, the better.

However, there are worries about cultural stereotyping.

For instance, Raul of Brazil is described as "feisty, strong and agile."

Meanwhile, Yong Bao of China is "driven to achieve" and "make progress."

Then there's Carlos of Mexico who is "proud" and "always wearing a smile."

We reckon it's great that Thomas is getting friends who represent other parts of the world.
