In theory, any child from around 18 months old can say please and thank you. In fact, as soon as your child can form words, you can start teaching him or her those words. However, getting a toddler to say please and thank you at the appropriate time is the tricky thing.
You may have noticed your baby saying something like ‘pees’ and ‘ta’ when they want something, or when you or someone else gives them something – that’s a very good start.
The best way to get your child used to using the words please and thank you correctly, and any other form of good manners in fact, is to set a good example, and be consistent.
If you want something from your child, remember to say please, and when they’re giving you something or doing something for you and remember to thank them.
When your child asks for something, make sure that you remind them to use the word please. For example, when they ask for juice, remind them to say ‘juice, please.’
By being consistent, and making a habit out of these words, you should find that your child starts remembering his manners.
