As a parent, coming across your two year old child masturbating can be quite a shock; however, you can rest assured that while it’s an uncomfortable experience for you, it’s perfectly normal, and should be nothing to worry about.

Whether your child is a toddler or older, the reason for masturbation is the same – it feels good. However, while older children may understand the sexual connotation, a toddler has no point of reference, and this is simply another way they are exploring their newly discovered bodies.

Of course, the fact that it is normal does not make it any less embarrassing for you. Try not to overreact though, as this may result in your child developing body issues. Rather try to ignore it.

If it becomes a problem in public, or when you are among friends or relatives, explain to your child that there are some body parts that are private, and they should only be explored in private.

If you give your child a healthy image of their body, and it’s functioning now, it will most certainly stand them in good stead further down the line.
