Car seat tantrums: how can I get my 2 year old to behave?

There’s one thing that’s not negotiable – that is, that when your child travels in the car, she’s firmly strapped into her car seat at all times. However, you might find that one of the ways your two year old chooses to test her independence is by refusing to comply with your requests – such as getting into the car seat.  You could try to wait it out, however, if you’re waiting, and your child is still not complying, then there’s a good chance that she won’t.

There’s a good chance that your child, like most others at this age, loves outings. So the simplest way to ensure that she complies with your request to get into the car seat is simply to tell her that until she does get in the car seat, no one is going anywhere.

Sitting in the car, with the engine off, in the driveway while you wait is no fun for you either, but it’s the best way to ensure that your child goes along with your request.
If that fails, then you may have to postpone your outing – it’s never safe to forego the car seat – not even once, so if your child won’t comply, and you can’t force her, then you cannot go out.
