You asked

What procedures should my child care facility have in place for outings?

Outings are fun for children, and a great part of being enrolled in day care. However, if your child is attending a particular day care, you want to ensure that they are adhering to the regulations regarding outings for the children. These regulations stipulate:

That parents should be made aware of the planned outing, and have the details discussed with and explained to them.
That parents should sign written consent forms allowing their child to participate in the outing.
That there are enough adult supervisors on the outing to take care of the children. The regulations don’t stipulate a specific number, but the generally acceptable ratio is one adult for every two children.
That emergency procedures are in place, including having a first aid kit on the outing, as well as a fully charged mobile phone, and a list of relevant local emergency numbers.
That the facility’s insurance policies provide adequate cover for the type of outing in question.

Also remember that as a parent, you do have the right to decide that your child should not participate in a particular outing if you feel that it is unsuitable.
