Between the age of 18 to 24 months, your toddler should be getting approximately 11 or 12 hours of sleep each night as well as taking a nap each day. If your toddler still takes two naps per day, consider yourself lucky and let them continue to do this as long as it is not affecting the sleep they get at night.
To help your toddler establish good sleep habits, it’s important that your child can fall asleep unaided. That is, they should be able to put themselves to sleep without being dependent on being held or rocked.
At this age, your child is probably testing his limits. He is more independent and wants everyone to know it. Letting him make decisions allows him to feel in control and will help curtail the bedtime battles. Let your toddler choose what book to read and what pajama to wear. And here’s a great tip…Ask him, “Do you want to go to bed now, or in ten minutes?” He gets to decide! Never ask, “Do you want to go to bed?” For a toddler, that answer is obvious.
