Girlie chats with my seven-year-old daughter

A video which recently hit the headlines shows a 4-year-old girl carefully explaining the merits of each and every cosmetic nestled within her mother's makeup bag.

Instead of smearing red lipstick across her mouth like I did as a child, little Mia concerned herself with perfecting her eyebrows and appeared all too eager to attain 'skinny face'.

I'll be honest, I didn't know I had eyebrows until the age of 16 and the notion of contouring with the hopes of achieving 'skinny face' still alludes me and yet, the footage didn't shock me.

According to reports, Mia's mum is a makeup artist so I firmly believe the little girl's interest in cosmetics is less to do with acquiring a skinny face and more to do with wanting to be just like her mummy.

I'm absolutely certain the video would have left me cold before I became a mum myself, but upon having Ella almost seven years ago I now realise that children are like sponges. They soak up absolutely everything, whether we like it or not.

However my own daughter's interest in cosmetics, which is nothing sort of obsessional, left me scratching my head. 'My child knows more about makeup than I do,' I realised with a sense of wonderment one day.

I would see her critiquing my application when I sat at my dressing table and I used find myself astounded by her reviews.

'Less bronzer Mummy. More mascara Mummy. Do you know how to do winged eyeliner?"

Finding it difficult to differentiate between mascara and liquid eyeliner half the time, I wondered where I had acquired this cosmetic guru.

Upon quizzing her on her vast knowledge, I soon learned that my daughter's babysitter schools her on the contents of her makeup bag in exchange for an hour's peace from kid's TV shows. Kudos to her on that one.

So while Ella may echo what she hears and could possibly put the staff of any cosmetic hall through their paces, she doesn't really know she she's saying nor does her interest have any actual bearing on her life.

She simply enjoys having something to chat to her mummy about. Girl to girl.

Yes, Ella knows why blusher exists, but when I attempted to make up her face alongside mine, she decided to decline my kind offer.

"Thanks, but I don't need it."

Mia doesn't really desire a skinny face, she just likes having the lingo to chat to her mum. Girl to girl.
