Am i doing anything wrong?

I am a 19year old mum and I think i'm doing everything wrong compared to mummies that are older than me!
My son's behaviour is really uncontrollable, he's just turned 16 months and i'm constantly being told he's bad because i'm still a kid myself. I try and do everything the best i can, when my son has tantrums I sit away but still in sight, let him get on with it then comfort him when he's finished. Is that wrong?
Also he has a cousin the same age as him who can say so many words such as garden, glass, cupboard.. not your average first words and my son only says daddy and no. Am I not teaching him enough?
