Facebook to change privacy settings for teens

Facebook has eased privacy rules for teen users, allowing 13 to 17-year-olds to post updates that can be seen by anyone.

Currently, posts by users in this age range can only be seen by friends or ‘friends of friends’.

The move comes at a time when cyber bullying and its horrific consequences are making headlines, resulting in calls for more protection for children and adolescents online.

Critics of the social networking site say this is an attempt by Facebook to increase advertising revenue at the expense of vulnerable teens, while Facebook itself says other sites like Twitter and Instagram already allow their teen users to do this.

The change has already begun rolling out slowly and once in place, it won’t automatically make posts available to the public - teen users will have the ability to do it themselves when posting.

Make sure you talk to your children and teens about the importance of online safety and encourage them to think seriously about anything they post online.
