The majority of mothers who return to work feel they are being pushed aside by employers.

A new survey found that 75% of women found it harder to progress in their career after they had children.

Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, said: “It is sadly still far too common for women to feel shoved aside at work because they’ve decided to have children. Aside from the obvious unfairness, it’s also bad for our economy, which means everybody ends up losing out.”

This is a growing concern for mums who plan to go back to work as one survey participant admitted she was “deliberately pushed towards a less financially rewarding role as it was assumed I would not be interested in a more challenging and lucrative role anymore.”

Mums who returned to their job found that their career had been stalled, with 25% feeling their bosses weren’t supportive and nearly half made to feel guilty for leaving work on time to collect their children.

These figures puts more pressure on the Coalition Government to introduce shared parental leave from April 2015 as it will “ensure career options remain open to women after pregnancy."
