Jobless families with at least two children face having their child benefit cut under new Tory plans.

There is a significant chance that this proposal will be included in next year’s general election announcement, as they aim to cut the welfare bill and encourage people to go back to work.

Tory MP David Davis suggests the idea is being put forward to test the public’s opinion.

Mr Davis said: “Welfare reform will be a big issue at the election. This is a highly contentious idea and I think you are seeing the Conservative Party testing it out to see if it is popular.”

Recently appointed to the Number 10 policy board, Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi suggested that households earning less than £30,000 a year could lose their entitlement to child tax credits worth £2,725.

He feels that benefit cuts should apply to all families, and not just those on benefits. This idea sparked a huge debate online, with many people saying it was long overdue.

However, sources reveal that discussion of a cap targeted at unemployed families is ongoing.
