Night terrors ( when it clicked)

Even though I had a older son who suffered with night terrors, when my youngest used to wake in the night when he was a baby screaming clingy to me one minute then pushing me away the next. Nothing seeming to comfort him. It didn't cross my mind it was the start of night terrors.
What I did think was he was just playing up he didn't want to go to bed he wanted to stay up at all night watching re runs of the flipping wiggles over and over again, as at one point this was the only way to get him to settle and finally fall back to sleep ( so I thought).
This was a regular occurrence and I had pretty much put it down to him just being a little sod.
Then as he got a little older it would be him waking up crying, shouting out, demanding things sometimes very random things from cheese, dummy, bot bot, biscuit cuddle I soon learn't after fetching most of these things it wasn't what he wanted. As he'd just push them away.

There were nights i'd be sat on the edge of my bed trying to rock him back to sleep as he's kicking out and trying to wriggle out of my arms he was crying for me but wouldn't let me hold him. ( if only i realised then holding him only made it worse).

A few times I would call his dad during his night shift at my wits end hoping if he heard his dads voice maybe that would settle him, It didn't and the wiggles no longer worked.
What was wrong with my son?
He wasn't crying because he was hungry or his nappy was wet.
Was he in pain maybe?
Calpol didn't seem to work either.
He was calling out for me but wouldn't let me hold him. Then one day it just clicked.

Could it be night terrors!
I had experienced them with my eldest son when he was around 2 and a half. Although much younger this was what I believe was the starting point of my now 4 year olds night terrors.
Proffessionals will tell you typically night terrors occur in children between the ages of 2 to 12 various sources differ. But they can and do appear in babies. In my case just like my son.

As he got older it became more noticeable the eposides were more distressing to watch and more frequent. He become more verbal although most of the times it was a blood curdling scream, words you couldn't make sense of or simply shouting out for mummy or I don't like it, I want to go home while sitting up right in bed. I'd be right there beside him but of course he didn't see me he'd be looking straight through me.
He didn't realise I was there even though his eyes were open and he was calling out my name and he looked very much awake, he wasn't and what ever it was that had unsettled him, scared him was still very much going on through his head.

If your child suffers with night terrors or you perhaps can relate to some of what I've written here you can find out more about night terrors and ways to help you deal with them at this group on Facebook called night terrors parent support group.
